And so it ends...

15 months of intense campaigning culminated at the Euro count at the Civic Centre in Poole. We won 3 seats – my colleagues Giles Chichester, Julie Girling and Ashley Fox. As the number of seats in the region was set to go down by one, the Conservative Party actually gained one seat from Labour. After abysmal local election results, Labour lost their only MEP in the West Country and polled fifth overall behind the Green Party (and in Cornwall, Labour came sixth).

This has been a wonderful campaign to be involved with. It was a real team effort from local and Euro candidates, association officers and members, agents, the regional team and supportive family members and friends who all played their part. I learnt a lot and had fun along the way. Thanks to all those involved and here's seeing you on the campaign trail as we push for success across the South West at the general election, whenever it is called.

I am sorry that you did not get in, after all your hard work, and also that we are not able to vote for individuals in this strange election.

I think the Conservative Party did themselves a disservice in this election, with its "We can reform the EU" policy. IMO, that is completely unrealistic. The EU is non-reformable, except around the unimportant edges. The electorate is waking up to that fact, especially in the South West as people feel the increasing pain of the "one size fits all" EU legislation.
